Davek’s Unbreakable Bags

Like James Dyson’s remarkable reworking of the vacuum cleaner, mechanical engineer David Kahng reinvented the umbrella by turning the rainy-day object into a weatherproof work of art. The entrepreneur’s Davek line of umbrellas are made from super-resilient Carbon WindFlex, a carbon polymer material that resists breakage or rib distortion, even in gale-force winds. The umbrellas also come equipped with solid-steel shafts and zinc-alloy handles for added durability. Now with the New York–based company’s first brand extension, Kahng and his team have introduced a collection of messenger bags built with the same devotion to high quality and durable craftsmanship.

The bags are made from top-grain leather ($495) or, for a sportier interpretation, high-impact ballistic nylon ($350) and come equipped with numerous functional details, including a built-in insert for pens and business cards, an extra padded laptop compartment, and an easy-to-release aerial hang-glider buckle made of forged aluminum. Naturally, the bags also feature an easy-access exterior pocket to store your coordinating Davek travel umbrella, which is included. (212.749.8746, www.davekny.com)
