When the checked pattern of the Louis Vuitton Damier Collection (www.louisvuitton.com) debuted in 1889 at the World’s Fair in Paris, the squares were brown and beige. The pattern quickly became the company’s primary motif, but it disappeared in 1896, when the LV monogram supplanted it. Louis Vuitton brought back the Damier 100 years later, in 1996, and has presented it in various color combinations since then. Two of the latest Damier designs are the $3,800 chocolate-brown laptop case and a sporty $1,170 orange-and-black duffel.
