A two-month trip across the continent last year inspired the Colette Steckel Africa jewelry collection (www.colettejewelry.com). The Mexican designer’s pieces, which are priced from $3,000 to $25,000, feature a mix of unusual gemstones that, to Steckel, recall the colors of Africa’s landscapes and animals. The bumblebee-jasper earrings displaying striations of yellow, orange, and black remind her of a lion’s coat; a fossilized-coral pendant featuring patterns in faded shades of pink and beige recalls desert sand; and the earring shown here, made of opal, green tourmaline, blue zircon, and diamond, resemble what the Okavango Delta and the moon looked like to Steckel when she viewed them from a helicopter.
