On April 5, Sotheby’s Hong Kong will present the De Beers Millennium Jewel 4 for auction at the Magnificent Jewels and Jadeite Spring Sale. This internally flawless fancy vivid blue diamond is among the largest to ever come to auction. Weighing in at just over 10 carats, it is approximately the size of a large almond. Jewel 4 is the only oval-shaped stone among the dozen rare diamonds from the De Beers Millennium Jewels collection, all of which were sourced from South Africa’s famed Cullinan Mine.
The gem has been part of a private collection since shortly after its public unveiling in 2000, and it is estimated to bring between $30 million and $35 million.
The Millennium Jewel 4 is the latest in Sotheby’s succession of dazzling colored diamonds. The auction house broke records last November when it sold the 12-carat fancy vivid Blue Moon diamond for $48.5 million. Colorful diamonds like these continue to gain value and excite collectors around the globe. (sothebys.com)
