Robb Design Portfolio: Spin Doctored

Andreas von Zadora-Gerlof pairs his elaborate, jeweled sculptures with timekeeping mechanisms in a manner that preserves uncluttered pedestals for the artworks. Among his new wristwatches is one adorned with a gold frog prince embedded with green tsavorites, diamonds, sapphires, and rubies and one featuring a ladybug set with black diamonds and rubies.

In 1989, Zadora-Gerlof, best known as simply Zadora, created an orbital-dial table clock decorated with a frog prince riding a snail. (Both creatures are made of gems.) The clock’s unusual movement, modeled on an 18th-century design, indicates the hours with a rotating ring on the perimeter of the base. Five years ago, Zadora (305.395.3247, www.zadoratimepieces.com) began adapting his clock design to watches. The resultant orbital jewelry watches, including the two shown here, are made by hand in Switzerland and priced at $150,000 apiece.
