BEST of the BEST 2015: Christophe Claret Maestoso

FREE PREVIEW: The Christophe Claret Maestoso is among Robb Report’s 2015 Best of the Best selections…

The revival and modernization of antique watchmaking styles has become increasingly popular in recent seasons. Although there are many impressive examples of this trend, the best of these is the new Maestoso (from $166,000) from the complication specialist Christophe Claret. With a transparent openwork dial arrangement and clean, contemporary lines on its case and chapter ring, the watch certainly does not have the appearance of a historical replica; however, the movement’s features are historically inspired, its angled bridges and pillars complementing the modern exterior. Shock absorbers and fail-safes protect the direct-impulse detent escapement—originally used to enhance the accuracy of marine chronometers—to make it practical for use in a wristwatch. A cylindrical hairspring regulates the balance wheel, which is fed by a constant-force device, giving the watch a unique tie to chronometric tradition. (christopheclaret.com)
