FrontRunners: One For The Road

Cartier (800.CARTIER, www.cartier.com) recently unveiled its first entirely new watch concept since the introduction of the wildly successful Tank Francaise in 1996. The aptly named Roadster marks the culmination of more than five years of research and development by the company’s creative team.

This sporty men’s timepiece echoes the avant-garde style of a 1950s roadster with its generous, curvaceous watchcase and a dial design that is reminiscent of an rpm gauge on a classic car. Among its identifiable characteristics are retro-styled numerals, a date with a magnifying glass, and a textured leather strap that resembles tire tread. Most important, the Roadster is Cartier’s first timepiece equipped with both a leather strap and a steel bracelet that can be switched in a matter of seconds without a trip to the jeweler. The new watch is priced at $3,750 in stainless steel and $9,900 in gold.

“At first sight, the Roadster conjures up images of classic design and a past era,” says Alain Viot, president and chief executive officer of Cartier Inc. “The design is masculine yet elegant.”
