Swiss Watchmaker Tag Heuer Partners with Intel and Google on Its New Smart Watch

The Tag Heuer Connected Watch is both old school and out of this world…

Taking a 150-year horologic legacy to the next level, the Tag Heuer Connected Watch brings an interconnected world to the wrist. A collaborative effort between the Swiss manufacture, the Intel Corporation, and Google, the high-tech timepiece combines traditional craftsmanship with state-of-the-art smart processing—a tribute to the past that beats a path to the future.

Though digital, the watch replicates Tag Heuer’s mechanical Carrera collection for its three virtual dial selections (a chronograph, standard three-hand, and GMT display), and the company says more choices are on the way. Realistic details include shadowed hands, hour and minute indices, date display, and a sunburst finish on the face (available in black, deep blue, or pearl white).

The watch features 4 gigabytes of memory and is capable of Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity and audio streaming. It is equipped with Intel’s Atom processor Z34XX and utilizes the Android Wear operating system, enabling it to run countless Android offerings, such as Google Maps, Google Fit, and Google Search when synced with a smart phone. (The watch syncs with Android 4.3 and Apple iOS 8.2 or newer versions.) Also available are applications specifically designed for Tag Heuer that cover lifestyle, golf, motorsports, and hiking.

Web browsing, alerts, and the like are displayed in the chronograph setting’s three subdials and can be enlarged to full-screen mode at a tap of the sapphire-crystal cover. Sans smart phone, the watch will rely on Wi-Fi to reach the cloud, though basic functions remain self-sufficient. And to make interaction even easier, a miniature microphone allows verbal access.

Elegantly encased in grade-2 titanium with a caseback and lugs to match, the Tag Heuer Connected Watch retails for $1,500. To ensure that connectivity remains cutting-edge, new features and upgrades can be downloaded at tagheurconnected.com as they become available. (tagheuerconnected.com)
