Perhaps the only wines from Pauillac that can surpass the reds from the first-growth estate, which dates to 1525, are its whites. A blend of 55 percent Sauvignon Blanc and 45 percent Sémillon, the 2007 vintage presents a medley of fresh melon, honeycomb, and lanolin layered over a delicious smokiness.
Tasting notes: The Château Suduiraut 2007 Sauternes is somewhat coy on the nose, offering subtle hints of lemon preserves, wild honey, and citrus blossoms. But on the palate, lively acidity contrasts with a voluptuous texture and intense flavors of orange marmalade, ripe pineapple, and—on the lengthy finish—zesty sea brine.
Tasting notes: Ripe, dense, creamy, toasty, and amazingly supple, this vintage will only improve with age. Worth knowing: This property has gone through many hands since it passed from the ownership of the Suduiraut family in the early 19th century. Suduiraut is remarkably consistent from year to year and always a superb value.
