When Daniel and Davia Koetser purchased Gstaad’s oldest palace hotel on its centenary, the Swiss couple’s ambition was not a simple cosmetic makeover, but rather an intelligent reimagining of a traditional Swiss Alpine lodge. Following a yearlong renovation, Le Grand Bellevue (www.bellevue-gstaad.ch) opened in December as a stylish ski retreat without a hint of stuffiness. Interiors by Davia and the Atelier Zürich design firm are warm and eclectic, balancing chalet-style decor with colorful textiles and bespoke furnishings. Guests can curl up in suspended birdcage chairs for afternoon tea in the lounge or sip Negronis at the zinc-topped cocktail bar. Après-ski destinations also include a 26,900-square-foot spa, a swimming pool, an 18-seat cinema, a sushi bar, a cigar lounge, a 9,000-bottle wine cellar, and a restaurant helmed by the Michelin-starred chef Urs Gschwend.
