Despite a new pool overlooking the Indian Ocean, a refurbished lobby, and a revamped restaurant menu and decor, Mauritius’ La Pirogue (+230.401.1688, www.lapirogue.com) remains a model of old-island charm.

Located off the coast of Madagascar, Mauritius is an isolated, unspoiled destination—and La Pirogue its finest place to dwell. The pool, lobby, and enhanced eatery were part of a $7 million renovation that has updated the resort while staying true to its fishing-village feel. Fragrant frangipani frames palm-thatched guest bungalows, each with a private terrace opening to 80 acres of tropical gardens and white-sand beaches. Exotic Mauritian curries highlight the upgraded menu at Thatches restaurant, which is now complemented by the resort’s new Blue Bar—another welcome product of the renovation that touched nearly every corner of La Pirogue. Left intact, however, was the exterior of the resort’s main building, whose distinctive form was inspired by the local fishing boats known as pirogues.
