The Intercontinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort opened in June on central Vietnam’s lush Son Tra Peninsula, not far from the former R&R facility (nicknamed I&I, for Intoxication & Intercourse) that housed U.S. troops during the Vietnam War. In recent years, this idyllic stretch on the South China Sea has become a hotbed for beach resorts, of which the 197-room InterContinental sets a new standard.

 

Designed by Bangkok-based architect and landscape designer Bill Bensley, the InterContinental shuttles guests in a 427-foot funicular from the hilltop lobby and dining complex to a cluster of mid-mountain accommodations and to a broad sandy beach below. Even the resort’s standard rooms are equipped with marble bathtubs and expansive balconies, while beachfront villas feature private pools.

 

Restaurants on the 98-acre property include La Maison 1888, helmed by the Michelin-starred French chef Michel Roux Jr., and Citron, which offers captivating views from dining booths shaped like conical Vietnamese hats. Beyond the resort, guests can explore the nearby 15th-century town of Hoi An, the walled ruins of Huê palace, and the abandoned ancient Hindu temples of My˜ Son.
