The photographer Slim Aarons was known for his iconic photos from the 1940s, ’50s, and ’60s, chronicling the well-heeled at play in spectacular homes around the world. Now, Exclusive Resorts and the famed camera maker Leica are giving budding photographers the opportunity to Shoot Like Slim Aarons with two four-day photography getaways, the first of which took place in Las Vegas in mid May; the second is scheduled for Southern California in October.
For the experience, participants will receive instruction on how to replicate Slim’s candid style from Leica Akademie instructors and from Slim’s daughter, the photographer Mary Aarons, who spent her high school and college vacations traveling as his assistant. “My dad’s greatest gift to me was that of world travel,” she says. “During my time with him on the road I learned so much about composition and the technical aspects of photography.”
The “traveling workshop” will take place October 3 through 7, with visits to the California desert and coastal destinations of Palm Springs and Malibu, while students stay in a luxury Airstream. During the Las Vegas and California workshops participants will have access to more than $100,000 worth of Leica camera equipment, hopefully ensuring their own Poolside Gossip—one of Slim Aaron’s most famous shots—is just a snap away.
The Las Vegas workshop package was priced at $7,655 for a single student, which included a Leica D-Lux camera to take home. Pricing for the California package will be announced in July. (exclusiveresorts.com)
