The Resort: Pezula Private Estate may be off South Africa’s standard tourist path, but this sprawling resort and residential community generously rewards those who make the detour. The 2,500-acre property—located on the rugged Indian Ocean coast, 300 miles east of Cape Town—is a sportsman’s paradise, with an 18-hole golf course and a Field of Dreams complex that encompasses tennis courts, a field for soccer and other sports, an archery range, and facilities for pétanque and Ultimate Frisbee. Guests of Pezula’s 83-suite hotel can also traverse the resort’s forest trails on foot or horseback, and take canoe trips down the property’s stretch of the Noetzie River to the spectacular and secluded Noetzie beach.
The Villa: In addition to its sandy shoreline and picturesque bay, Noetzie beach has become known for the number of castles that have been built in the area as vacation homes. In 2000, Pezula’s owner acquired three such castles (built between 1930 and 1970), renovated the buildings, and reopened them as Pezula Private Castle. The three-building, 53,550-square-foot complex includes a three-bedroom main castle and two one-bedroom castles with a heated infinity-edge pool, a thatch-roofed gazebo, a gym, living rooms with wood-burning fireplaces, and a 10-seat dining room. Guests of the accommodation are attended by a chef, housekeeper, and butler.
The Highlight: Listening to the waves roll in from the main castle’s upper terrace during an alfresco massage.
The Price: From $10,900 per night, all-inclusive, for as many as 10 guests. +27.44.302.5332, www.pezula.com
