The Coachella Valley has long been a playground for the rich and famous thanks to its dry warm air, natural hot springs, mid-century modern architecture, and the illegal gambling dens and fly-in hotels of the 1950s and 60s. Palm Springs mayor Sonny Bono killed the party in 1991 when he banned cruising the streets in thong bikinis, but the desert is back in full swing thanks to Goldenvoice, the concert promotions company behind Coachella, Stagecoach, and other desert festivals. The fun isn’t limited to the Empire Polo Field, however, and the desert is packed with high-end activities, especially during April’s festival season.
