The Cloister opened in 1928 as an intimate 46-room hotel, designed by Addison Mizner. Almost 80 years later, the 156-room resort retains Mizner’s signature Gothic tracery windows but offers the full gamut of 21st-century luxuries and some of the finest golf courses in the south. The Seaside Course (created in 1929 and updated by Tom Fazio in 1999), the Plantation Course (renovated by Rees Jones in 1998), and the Retreat Course (designed by Davis Love III). Accommodations The resort has 122 guest rooms and 34 suites. Dining The Georgian Room, warmed by a fireplace and crystal chandeliers, offers an elegant take on Southern cuisine. Recreation The Sea Island Stables offer equestrian activities, while the Sea Island Yacht Club furnishes sportfishing and cruising boats. Worthy Diversion No visit to the area would be complete without a trip to Jekyll Island, a historic settlement named by Georgia founder General James Oglethorpe. Rates From $725 to $5,000.
