Two designers debut one-of-a-kind private resort communities in Bali.
One is a famed Frenchman, the other an accomplished designer and the daughter of the jewelry-brand owner John Hardy. Each is creating a private community in Bali, where topographical extremes—breezy beaches and jungle-covered mountains—provide two distinct backdrops for their two distinct visions of life on the Indonesian island.
Located in the stylish Petitenget neighborhood near Seminyak Beach, the Stairs represents a first for the always-inventive Philippe Starck. The private village, which features 12 one-bedroom villas and is scheduled to debut late next year, will include a restaurant, a patisserie, a lounge, a boutique, a library, a spa, and a fitness center. Each of the nearly 2,500-square-foot units will be identical in layout, with indoor/outdoor living spaces, a loft-style master suite, and a 36-foot-long swimming pool in a garden-lined courtyard. Starck’s trademark ingenuity will be apparent in playful bespoke furnishings that will include hammered metal tables, circular lava-stone bathtubs, and canopy beds strung with orange silk passementeries. Starck has also enlisted the U.S. artist JonOne to design one-of-a-kind artworks for each villa’s 25-foot glass facade.
The Stairs’ villas are available on leasehold, or hak sewa in the local parlance, for a period of 37 years (priced from $1 million). Owners will enjoy services including a 24-hour concierge, personal trainers, and transportation to and from Ngurah Rai International Airport. When not using their residences, they can enter the units into a rental pool or share them with friends and family.
While Starck’s streamlined luxury villas are expected to elevate the beach home in Seminyak, Elora Hardy’s 13-residence Green Village is taking tree house–style living to new heights in the jungles of Sibang Kaja, just outside of Ubud. The bamboo homes designed by Hardy through her Bali-based firm, Ibuku, rise above the Ayung River like sculptures integrated into the undulating landscape. Interiors are similarly inspired by their surroundings, with open-air living spaces and multilevel layouts that minimize the homes’ footprints and maximize their views. Each unit is custom designed and furnished for the owner by Hardy, who has completed seven homes with such details as black bamboo flooring, hand-hammered copper bath fixtures, and private plunge pools.
Three sites are currently available at Green Village, priced from $600,000 to $700,000 for a leasehold of 23 to 60 years, depending on the location. The sites are suitable for 2,000- to 3,000-square-foot villas, or what Hardy refers to as her “big dreams made out of overgrown grass.”
