The Best of the Best 2003: Style - Jaeger-LeCoultre

Jaeger-LeCoultre has created the most impressive jewelry watch of
the year by breaking the rules of conventional gem setting. Forsaking the uniform rows of carefully matched stones found on a normal pavé diamond watch, the Reverso Neva ($41,700) weaves a more natural pattern from stones of different sizes.

Called the “snowflake” setting, the technique is the brainchild of master gem setter Alain Kirchhof, who uses diamonds ranging from 0.6 to 1 millimeter in diameter. The variation in size allows the setter a degree of artistic expression in placing the more than 550 diamonds on the case, making each timepiece unique. The undulating pavé fields of the Reverso Neva showcase the full potential of the technique, giving the piece a soft, lively quality that is impossible to duplicate with traditional pavé methods.
It is Jaeger-LeCoultre’s particular point of pride that it has applied the Reverso design to almost every imaginable watchmaking complication. The Neva’s snowflake setting is yet another sublime adaptation of the Reverso’s remarkable convertibility. Rarely has the company’s technical expertise yielded such femininely beautiful results.
