The Best of the Best 2003: Watches - Patek Philippe

<< Back to Robb Report, June 2003

For years, Swiss watchmakers have adhered to the belief that women do not like to fuss with their watches. This perception has prevented even premium watchmakers from outfitting their women’s watches with mechanical complications. After years of courting women with its quartz-powered Twenty-4 collection and high jewelry watches, Patek Philippe is introducing the fairer sex to the mechanics that have made the company so famous. The reference 4858 with a hand-wound movement and moon-phase display ($12,400) is the most feminine mechanical watch ever produced by the company. The runaway success of its stylish quartz Twenty-4 proved that Patek Philippe can produce a watch that appeals to young women. Now, with the 4858 and its cousin (ref. 4857) with the revered Calatrava case, it hopes to show that women also covet the prestigious Geneva firm’s mechanical expertise. “Some ladies have purchased multiple Patek Philippes from us,” says Peter
Kirles of Kirles Jewelers in Indianapolis, Ind. “Sophisticated women are really beginning to appreciate mechanical watches, and so, naturally, they are drawn to both the piece and the name.”
