Limited to just 2,000 pieces worldwide, the Breitling Transocean Chronograph Edition is a retro-styled timepiece inspired by the design of a travel watch the company produced in 1956. The outer edge of the watch’s two-tone dial is marked with a tachymeter scale, which can determine the speed of an object traveling a fixed distance. The left subdial serves as a constant seconds indicator, while the right subdial records the minutes that have elapsed when the chronograph function is active. A nice vintage throwback, this 30-minute totalizer features long marks at three, six, and nine minutes—a common feature of chronometers from the 1950s that allowed their wearers to time long-distance phone calls, which were billed in three-minute intervals. A date window positioned at 6 o’clock rounds out the watch’s functions. The back crystal of the timepiece is protected by a hinged steel cover that, when opened, reveals not only the watch’s automatic movement but also a personal, engraved message. Like all Breitling watches, the Transocean Chronograph Edition, priced at $9,695, has been certified as a chronometer by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute, meaning it will maintain a high level of precision in a range of conditions.
