FrontRunners: Full-Bodied Beauty

<< Back to Robb Report, August 2005

Watches have become so large these days that Cartier (800.227.8437, www.cartier .com) decided its most massive model, the 38 mm Pasha de Cartier, was looking underfed. While creating its new Pasha 42 ($13,900 to $47,900), the company beefed up more than just the case. The 42 mm watch features a new movement—the 8000 MC made by Jaeger-LeCoultre—that is a significant advancement from the ubiquitous ETA 2892 variations that Cartier used in previous Pashas. The Jaeger-LeCoultre movement is double-barreled, with a 52-hour power reserve, but its real appeal is aesthetic. Cartier’s seminal watchmaking achievements during the early 20th century (including the creation of some of the first wristwatches) often were the results of collaborations with Parisian watchmaker Edmond Jaeger, who later partnered with David LeCoultre. Their legacy company’s beautiful complications complement Cartier’s artfully proportioned design, giving the new, larger Pasha a sense of gravitas, as well as gravity.
