FrontRunners: Indicative Design
The Indicator chronograph from Porsche Design (800.521.5152, www.porsche-design.com) underscores the extreme measures that watchmakers will take to incorporate a digital display into a purely mechanical timepiece. Although based on the stalwart Valjoux/ETA 7750 chronograph movement found in many watches, the Indicator includes a new base plate and three extra spring barrels to power the revolving digits, which can be reset to zero by pushing a button, as on a standard chronograph. The Indicator’s design borrows from the Porsche Carrera GT; its oversize hands and ribbed pushers, for example, were derived from the car’s dashboard gauges and pedals. But unlike many of the automotive-themed watches racing onto the market, the Porsche Design piece, which engineers from Swiss manufacturer Eterna devised, has some serious mechanical horsepower behind it.
