FrontRunners: Mountain Time

If Aspen hasn’t appeared on your watch-buying radar, consider this: One of the most celebrated watchmakers in the world, François-Paul Journe, has chosen Hochfield Jewelers (970.925.5363) as the site of his first U.S. watchmaking seminar. Journe’s appearance is scheduled for June 14 and 15 to coincide with the Aspen Food & Wine Classic.

While global capitals such as New York, Geneva, and London traditionally top the shopping destination lists for timepiece collectors, Ron Hochfield’s watch and jewelry emporium in the Little Nell resort offers a remarkable inventory worthy of Bond Street.

Hochfield’s first Aspen store, Second Time Around Watch Co., opened in 1985 and specialized in the restoration and sale of vintage wristwatches. Primed for the mechanical wristwatch rebirth of the 1990s, he added new watch collections from the very best of the auteur watchmakers: Michel Parmigiani, François-Paul Journe, and Roger Dubuis. “For our many vintage watch collectors, the segue into new watches was especially alluring because of the added opportunity of being able to meet with the craftsman whose name is displayed on the dial,” says Hochfield, who also hosted Michel Parmigiani for an event last February.
