President Nixon made his historic trip to China, Carole King’s Tapestry swept the Grammys, M*A*S*H and The Godfather were big draws at the box office, and Prozac was developed—the year was 1972. At the same time in Geneva, watchmaker Vacheron Constantin (877.862.7555, www.vacheron-constantin.com) was stretching the limits of convention with an asymmetrical trapezoid watch that would be named for the year in which it was created. To celebrate the 1972’s 30th birthday, Vacheron has given the recently refreshed and relaunched model a new couture wardrobe courtesy of Paris’ house of Lesage, the famous embroidery atelier that has served haute couture fashion houses and theatrical costume designers since 1858. Sharing a common emphasis on handcrafted artistry, the two houses have created six innovative hand-embroidered and hand-beaded straps, each reflecting the aesthetic mood of the 1970s. Six 1972 Commemorative Edition models are being offered, including Art (shown), and each is limited to 10 pieces. The watches are available in rose gold ($20,500) or white gold ($22,000) pavé with more than a carat of Top Wesselton diamonds. The collection is available in Vacheron Constantin boutiques throughout the world, but only by special order in the United States.
