Motivated to maintain its position at the precipice of artistry, Swiss horologist Jaquet Droz recently revealed a new line of limited-edition Paillonné Enameled timepieces. Pulling from the 18th-century art of enameling, each watch face is covered in ornamental paillons (tiny gold-leaf motifs) and then coated with fondant (translucent enamel) to set the gold in place. The result is a masterpiece of subtle detail with an air of imperial sophistication.

The exquisite Grande Seconde Paillonné comes in blue, violet, or anthracite gray and features an 18-karat, 43 mm red-gold case. The watches are powered by a self-winding mechanical movement carrying a power reserve of up to 68 hours. A more dainty design, the Petite Heure Minute 39 mm Paillonné eschews the seconds hand of the Grande Seconde and is also available in either blue, violet, or anthracite gray. Another new addition, the Petite Heure Minute 35 mm Paillonné comes exclusively in blue.

For those desiring an old-school look, Jaquet Droz has applied the paillonné treatment to a 40-hour pocket watch (available in blue or red) encased in a 50 mm red-gold. The 43 mm Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Tourbillion Paillonné rounds out the collection and is equipped with the first tourbillon movement (with an impressive seven-day power reserve) ever featured in the line.

All of the models in the new collection are limited to just eight examples in each color. Pricing for the Paillonné Enameled timepieces is available upon request. (jaquet-droz.com)
