Spring Watch Auction Preview

MAY 14, 2016

While the primary watch market—referring to modern watches sold at retail—continues to flounder, the auction market for timepieces is on the brink of what John Reardon, international head of Christie’s watch department, calls “a season of superlatives.” What gives? “You don’t need an entire economy to support us,” explains Aurel Bacs, cofounder of Bacs & Russo, which has partnered with Phillips to produce two upcoming watch sales in Geneva: the “Start-Stop-Reset” thematic auction of stainless-steel chronographs on May 14 and the firm’s third watch auction on May 15. “You just need a couple hundred aficionados, nerds, and collectors who have the deep desire, passion, and pleasure to own a vintage watch.” Over the course of the next four weeks, three of the industry’s biggest auction houses will stage seven watch sales aimed squarely at global collectors.
