Located on just 16 acres of picturesque vineyards in Tuscany’s coastal region of Bolgheri, Tenuta dell’Ornellaia is renowned for producing a number of the best Super Tuscan blends, most notably Masseto, a much-coveted single-vineyard Merlot. With an anticipated release in the autumn of 2009, the 2006 vintage promises to match the quality of the impressive 2001. Stylistically, the two wines share similar tannic structures and ripe-fruit characteristics—both the result of dry growing seasons that produced smaller, more concentrated clusters of grapes. Though slightly higher in acid than the 2001 vintage, the Tenuta dell’?Ornellaia Masseto 2006 remains exquisitely well balanced, displaying all of the characteristics that are necessary to achieve vinous perfection. The projected retail price for this landmark vintage of Masseto is $520.
