FrontRunners: Domestic Bliss

DOMESTIC BLISS Doctors may no longer make house calls, but there is a sommelier who will. Wines on the Fly, a program offered by Sam’s Wines & Spirits (www.samswine.com) of Chicago, will bring 24 wines directly to wherever you wish for a private tasting. For a group of eight or more, Sam’s co-owner Brian Rosen and one of his master sommeliers will fly to your premises and discuss the vintages. (The host typically provides dinner.) Samplings at a recent event ranged from a $35 Jean Garaudet Pommard Noizons 2004 to a $310 Mouton-Rothschild Premier Grand Cru Classic Pauillac 2003. At another, a $2,000 magnum of 1982 Château Lafite-Rothschild was the center of attention. During the events, participants may purchase wines at a 10 percent discount, and the bottles are shipped within a week. The average collective expenditure for a tasting is $30,000.
