FrontRunners: Select Smoke

<< Back to Robb Report, August 2007

Although the Por Larrañaga cigar brand dates to the 1830s, it has remained relatively obscure. It stands to gain new stature, however, thanks to a new line from the Florida company Cuban Imports (866.731.2822). The Por Larrañaga Cuban Grade cigar is made from gentle Dominican and Honduran fillers, a slightly spicy Mexican binder, and a silky Ecuadoran-grown Connecticut-seed wrapper. (The cigar also comes with a Mexican maduro wrapper.) The Cuban Grade moniker seems inappropriate, because no Cuban cigar we have smoked offers such a delightfully mild, inviting taste. Six sizes are available, ranging from a 4.5 x 42 corona ($5.50) to a 7 x 54 double corona ($8). The Prometheus International Tres Blue (www.prometheuskkp.com) is difficult to misplace. Under a light, the $150 deep-blue-tinted Italian crystal ashtray casts a cobalt glow on its surroundings. The one-pound, 7.5-inch tray accommodates a single cigar.
