FrontRunners: Select Smoke

The Joya de Nicaragua Serie C was created to entice smokers who felt overwhelmed by the powerful flavor of the Nicaraguan puros for which the brand is known. An Ecuador-grown, Connecticut-seed wrapper is the distinguishing ingredient in a cigar that is far milder and more accessible than any other from Joya de Nicaragua. To our surprise, the light Ecuadoran wrapper works beautifully with the heavy, three-year-old Nicaraguan filler, producing a smooth yet intensely flavorful smoke. Four sizes are available; we sampled the 5 x 52 robusto pictured here. ($45 to $68 for a box of 20) www.joyadenicaragua.com.ni

If you ever have brought a prized cigar to a special event, only to find that it had been destroyed in transit, you will appreciate the Xikar Envoy single cigar case shown at left. The Envoy’s Spanish cedar fuselage accommodates a cigar as large as a 54-ring gauge and is clad in your choice of four colors of armada leather. ($30) www.xikar.com
