The penchant for one-upmanship among the legions of single-malt whisky drinkers and collectors is escalating the competition among Scot- land’s distilleries to produce the most expensive single malt. Witness the bottle of The Macallan 60-year-old that sold for $21,000 at auction and Bowmore’s 1898 that went for $21,736. Now William Grant & Sons, fifth generation family owners of Balvenie and Glenfiddich, have released The Rare Whisky Collection—some of their oldest and most flavorful malt whiskies—as single cask, limited editions.

The selection includes The Balvenie Vintage Cask 1966, The Balvenie 25 Year Old Single Cask, Ladyburn 1973, Glenfiddich 30 Year; Glenfiddich 40 Year, and Glenfiddich 1937.

At $14,000 a bottle, Glenfiddich 1937 is billed as the oldest, most expensive single malt in the world. Normally, most barrels yield approximately 265 bottles, but because of 64 years of evaporation (Glenfiddich 1937 was bottled in October 2001), only 61 bottles exist.
