Sip Rare Whiskies at the Universal Whisky Experience

Richard Carleton Hacker

From April 2 through 5, collectors, connoisseurs, and other serious sippers of single-malt scotch and related spirits will be able to sample some of the world’s rarest ultra-premium whiskies (most valued at more than $300 per pour) alongside their master blenders and brand ambassadors. It all takes place at the fourth annual Universal Whisky Experience at the Encore Resort at Wynn Las Vegas.

The event, which is the creation of the whisky collector and entrepreneur Mahesh Patel, starts Wednesday with a cocktail reception and four-course Glenfiddich whisky-pairing dinner ($165 per person) at Delmonico Steakhouse with Glenfiddich’s malt master, Brian Kinsman, and a special menu created by Emeril Lagasse. A Thursday-morning golf outing ($275) with whisky distillers, blenders, and brand ambassadors will be available at the nearby Canyon Gate Country Club. That evening, a dinner as part of the High Roller package will entail visits by the master blenders to each table for Q & A sessions with the diners.

Friday afternoon, participants will have the opportunity to taste a selection of rare whiskies that include 25-year-old Dalmore, 40-year-old Fettercairn, and 1973 Ardbeg, among many others. Later that evening, the main tasting commences with 51 distilleries showcasing some of the rarest spirits from Scotland, Ireland, the United States, France, and Japan, and concludes with a buffet dinner from the Wynn/Encore’s executive chef, James Benson, and his team.

Saturday is filled with 20 Master Classes (choose up to four at $75 each, if not purchased as part of the High Roller package) that include tastings and exclusive information from some of the industry’s top distillers, blenders, and brand ambassadors. The all-inclusive High Roller package ($2,495) also features a collector’s bottle of whisky and a cut-crystal Glencairn tasting glass to use at the event and take home. Alternatively, the Connoisseur package ($525) covers just the Friday tastings and dinner.

RobbReport.com readers can receive special discounts for the event by using the code HR300 for $300 off the High Roller package or C100 for $100 off the Connoisseur package. (www.universalwhiskyexperience.com)
