Subtle, golden Birra di Capri Ligea (birracapri.com) is a standout among European lagers. Brewed on Capri using local hops and grains, the lager is the latest project of the Brunetti family, winemakers whose roots on the island go back centuries. Unlike the exceedingly light and often bitter lagers of Germany, the Czech Republic, and the United Kingdom, Ligea is unfiltered and unpasteurized, giving it a full-bodied character and a delicate sweetness tinged with flavors of apple, fig, and honey. Its unusually high carbonation also imparts a richness beyond that of most lagers. At 5 percent ABV, Ligea is a supreme table beer that would make a fine companion to full-flavored Mediterranean fare. A 750 mL bottle costs about $15, but the celebratory 1.5-liter bottle, priced around $30, has an undeniable appeal to those with a taste for la dolce vita.
