Wine Goes Green

    Napa, California’s CADE Winery is the first solar powered, green- certified building with organically farmed wines in the Napa Valley area. CADE, whose name is derived from a Shakespearean term used for an oak cask or barrel, is the latest venture from the California-based hospitality group PlumpJack. The winery is releasing a 2006 Napa Cuvee Cabernet Sauvignon timed with the winery’s opening in March, which is a blend of 76 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 23 percent Merlot and 1 percent Petit Verdot, aged for 18 months and racked three times. The winery, perched atop Napa’s Howell Mountain, comprises more than 60 acres. While 21 acres were planted as vineyards in 2003, the remaining 39 will be protected in a land trust to ensure they will remain open space, dedicating the space to environmentally conscious vine growing and winemaking.
