Merry Edwards 2007 Sauvignon Blanc Russian River Valley

Few winemakers have graced our Best of the Best list with such pleasing frequency as Merry Edwards, who remains the undisputed mistress of American Pinot Noir—thanks in large part to her interest in clones and her understanding of their impact on the quality of the finished wine. The meticulous matching of appropriate Pinot Noir clones to vineyard sites has, in fact, been a key component of the tremendous success of her own wine program since she cofounded Merry Edwards Wines in 1997. Although past recognition has focused primarily on irresistibly sophisticated reds, this marks the second year that we have chosen to honor Edwards for her only white wine, a sublime Sauvignon Blanc. Modeled on the style of Sauvignon Blanc that she made as the winemaker for Matanzas Creek Winery, the Merry Edwards 2007 Sauvignon Blanc Russian River Valley (www.merryedwards.com, $29) exhibits refreshing honeydew melon and pear fruit—in this case, spiked with hints of limoncello and mace that carry on through the finish.
