The Ultimate 44 Magnum

The Arturo Fuente family members are perfectionists. In spite of the fact they are the largest privately owned cigar company in the world, they are constantly striving to improve upon their much-in-demand cigars, which already enjoy a cult-like following. A prime example is their Arturo Fuente Rosado Sungrown Magnum R series (the R stands for Rosado, a deep reddish brown spicy wrapper leaf), which was introduced a few years ago. Four vitolas (shapes) were in the line, with ring sizes ranging from 52 to 58. Each was a very limited annual production, as not only are the wrappers in demand, but the cigars are aged for long periods of time, usually six months to a year.

Nonetheless, in 2012 the Fuentes brought out yet another addition to the sweetly rich Magnum series, the Arturo Fuente Rosado Sungrown Magnum R44 ($6.75 each; $267.50 for a box of 44). This smaller 5×44 size features the same Ecuadoran Rosado Sungrown wrapper and Chateau de la Fuente–grown Dominican binder and filler as the rest of the Magnum line, but it uses tobaccos taken from the lower primings of the plant, which produce a gentler flavor that is complemented by the slightly increased strength, due to the smaller ring gauge of the R44. Thus, when it comes to achieving a balanced taste, this 44 Magnum is right on target. (www.cigarfamily.com)
