Hat Yai is a city in southern Thailand near the Malaysian border, and it’s also the name of this restaurant in Northeast Portland. Chef-owner Earl Ninsom brings a lot of bold flavors to this restaurant that is part of the rich and varied culture of great Thai food in town. Ninsom also owns PaaDee, a place where you can get any Thai dish you want—like khao soi—and also has a fine-dining restaurant hidden in the back called LangBaan.
But over at Hat Yai, you’ll love dishes like Ninsom’s chicken that’s been marinated in curry spices and fried with a lot of shallots (which is never a bad thing). The roti with curry dipping sauce is a must-have, and the Turmeric Curry with mussels is delicious, as well. Bring your appetite.
