Best Of The Best 2006: An Inspired Insignia

Founded in 1972, Joseph Phelps’ eponymous winery has steadily continued to grow and release wines of extraordinary quality and consistency. As trends in winemaking have come and gone, Joseph Phelps Vineyards has steadfastly focused on a classic style of winemaking that is quintessentially Californian, establishing its reputation, over the decades, as one of the iconic producers of the Napa Valley. One of the primary driving forces behind the legend of Joseph Phelps has been senior vice president and director of winemaking Craig Williams, who joined the winery in 1976, and who continues to apply his considerable talents and intuition to shepherding the release of one superb vintage after another.

The winery’s signature Meritage blends set the standard by which other wines made in that style have long been measured, and the Joseph Phelps Insignia Napa Valley 2002 carries on that tradition. Voluptuous and always silky, the 2002 combines Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Malbec to yield a mélange of sweet blackberry and plum, smoky oak, and rich dark chocolate.
