BEST of the BEST 2014 | Leisure | Domestic White Wines: Schramsberg J. Schram 2005 Brut Rosé

Founded in Napa valley in 1862 by the German immigrant Jacob Schram near the town of Calistoga, Schramsberg was an early benchmark of quality in the region and even figured in the writing of Robert Louis Stevenson, who mentions the winery in his accounts of his journey to California. About 30 years after Prohibition, the vineyard and winery came into the hands of the businessman Jack Davies, who, by the mid-1960s, restored the property and set out to convince the world that the Golden State could compete with Europe in the production of fine sparkling wines. The Schramsberg J. Schram 2005 Brut Rosé (www.schramsberg.com, $140) reaffirms his conviction, dazzling the senses with its complex bouquet and essences of grapefruit, fresh ginger, lemon curd, and buttered toast.
