Born to Be Mild

When brothers Mike and Joe Chiusano introduced their Cusano 59 Rare Cameroon in 2008, it was notable for its east African Cameroon wrapper, rather than the spicier version from the west side of that country. The difference is readily apparent in the deep tan color of the wrapper and its almost minty bouquet, with just a sprinkling of Cameroon spice and a hint of hay in the finish. Plus, there is a Dominican sun-grown wrapper leaf in the filler recipe. As a result, these cigars are mild and delicately sweet?so much so that they pair well with a three-to-one ratio vodka martini or even ginjo-shu sake. Extremely well constructed and well fermented, the new 5×50 robusto shape complements the flavor. The number 59 was selected in honor of Joe’s age at the time of this cigar’s introduction. Like Joe, the Cusano 59 is not overbearing but is consistent and easy to get along with. (www.cusanocigars.com)
