The Dominican Republic resort area of Puerto Plata is also the home of the leading rum in the Caribbean. Although other expressions of Brugal are made, it is the double-distilled 1888—named for the year Don Andrés Brugal founded this family-owned distillery—that best showcases his legacy. A blend of rums aged six to eight years in American oak barrels are transferred for further maturation in sherry casks of the same quality used to age Macallan single malt (although no single malt has been aged in these first-fill casks). As a result, this full-bodied rum basks in caramel, chocolate, and spicy hints of cinnamon and sherried vanilla, and is best appreciated neat. ($50)
