Indulge in a Mint Julep

A Kentucky Derby without a mint julep is like a thoroughbred without a jockey, and for this year’s race, Woodford Reserve pays homage to the legendary drink with a 24-karat gold-plated, sterling-silver Mint Julep cup honoring jockeys of past and present for $1,000 each. Only 99 cups will be made, including three special editions featuring a trio of diamonds, engraved with the signature of one of the three living Triple Crown Winners. The special editions will sold via an online auction on Woodford’s Web site the second half of April. Buyers will not only be helping a charity benefiting injured jockeys but will also receive what is arguably the world’s most expensive Mint Julep: When picked up the day of the race, May 2, the cups will be filled with sugar cane from the Reunion Island of France, Turkish mint from the Euphrates River, ice from central Norway, and the master distiller’s personal selection of Woodford Reserve bourbon—an expression uniquely blended for this cocktail alone from barrels of bourbon aged between six and eight years. For those who miss the online sale and auction, any remaining cups will be sold and filled at the race. (www.woodfordreservemintjulep.com)
