It’s a Bird, It’s a Plane—No, It’s the Hendrick’s Gin Flying Cucumber

The cucumber-infused spirit inspired the giant green airship, which is taking to the skies of major U.S. cities…

In a rather fantastic and whimsical publicity stunt, Hendrick’s Gin has launched a giant dirigible that, with its vegetable-green livery, has been appropriately christened the Flying Cucumber. The 130-foot-long, 44-foot-tall airship makes its debut today in the skies above Los Angeles—and Robb Report is among the first media outlets to take a flight aboard the gigantic helium-filled gourd. The impetus for this exceptional exploit is Hendrick’s equally distinctive spirit, a gin infused with cucumber essence, in addition to rose and 11 botanicals.

The utterly original Flying Cucumber is the first vessel in the fleet of Hendrick’s Air, a new venture through which the William Grant & Sons brand plans to promote its gin (about $35 per bottle) and a return to the glamour of flight. Indeed, from aboard the aircraft—which cruises at a leisurely 35 mph and an altitude of 1,000 feet (an elevation that does not require cabin pressurization)—passengers will have a unique vantage point from which to gaze upon the city below. For these purely scenic flights—the aircraft’s exterior displays an oversized and ominous “eye in the sky”—the vessel will take off and land at the same location, and Hendrick’s says that it has formulated a specialty cocktail that it will serve aboard these low-altitude flights.

Following its maiden voyage in the airspace above Los Angeles, the Flying Cucumber will grace the skies of San Francisco, Austin, Dallas, South Florida, New Jersey, New York, Philadelphia, Boston, Ann Arbor, Indianapolis, and Chicago, crossing the country from now until August. However, not just anyone will be afforded an experience aboard the soaring vegetable.

For a chance to win a trip on the soon-to-be-famous Flying Cucumber, take a photo of the aircraft as it flies above your city, and post it on Twitter or Instagram, using the hashtags #HendricksGin and #CucumberChallenge (and throw in a #FlyingCucumber while you’re at it). And stay tuned to Robb Report’s social media channels—Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram—for photos, videos, and details of our experience aboard the incredible Hendrick’s Gin Flying Cucumber.
