Irish whiskeys are traditionally on the light side, but the delicate honeyed taste of Irish single malt has been given a bold bit of muscle with this sherry cask–finished variation, popularly known as Twin Wood. Distilled in 1994, Twin Wood was aged in ex–bourbon barrels for just over 15 years, then put into Oloroso sherry butts for nine additional months. Bottled in 2010, the result is a much more intense 16-year-old Irish whiskey with a slight amber tinge to its normally golden hue, and a smooth, mellow flavor enhanced by the nutty, sherried nuances of yeasty oak, apples, and olives. Only 1,900 signed and numbered bottles have been produced. ($100)
