Kamado-style ceramic grills were first popularized in the 1960s. Since that time, little has changed in the design and functionality of the charcoal cookers—until the recent debut of the Kamado Joe ProJoe.
The ProJoe offers the largest grilling area of any Kamado grill, with more than 6 square feet across two tiers (more than three times as much as most models). But this 575-pound behemoth from barbecue manufacturer Kamado Joe is impressive for more than its accommodating dimensions. Thanks to its three-part construction—a ceramic-fiber insulation layer wrapped around an inner ceramic core and housed within a brushed stainless-steel outer casing—the grill achieves supreme heat retention. This design also reduces the barbecue’s exterior temperature by 50 percent compared with traditional Kamado grills, and an innovative ventilation system allows for more precise temperature control inside.
The grill, which at press time was to be available in late June, costs about $11,000 with an optional stainless-steel cart.
