MALIBU, CALIF.—Secluded in waters stretching from the North Atlantic to the South Pacific, the world’s eight most exclusive private island retreats have been selected by the editors of Robb Report, the international luxury lifestyle authority.
These elite properties, which offer distinctive experiences that cater to the most discerning travelers, are unveiled in the magazine’s March issue, on newsstands February 22.

Anticosti Island (Quebec). A sportsman’s paradise, this Jamaica-sized island at the mouth of the St. Lawrence River offers visitors bountiful deer-hunting, fishing, lobstering, hiking, four-wheeling, and snowmobiling. The main lodge at Anticosti Exclusive Domain, the island’s hub, features eight bedrooms with modern amenities, exquisite Quebecois cuisine, and helicopter rides to the breathtaking waterfalls on the Salmon River.
Cayo Espanto (Belize). The four-acre, four-villa isle near San Pedro in northeastern Belize is acclaimed for the uncompromised privacy it provides couples and families. A 15-minute boat ride takes guests to the Belize Barrier Reef, where scuba divers can swim with groupers, barracudas, nurse sharks, and moray eels.
Frégate Island (Seychelles). An “ecological Eden begging to be explored,” Frégate Island is home to giant tortoises and exotic birds that roam freely among the property’s 16 ocean-view villas. Guests can relax on sun-drenched beaches or enjoy snorkeling, scuba diving, and deep-sea fishing. Frégate House offers gourmet dining, while the Plantation House serves casual Creole dishes.
Great Mercury Island (New Zealand). The rugged beauty of Great Mercury Island includes soaring white cliffs, roaming sheep and Angus cattle, and a forest of skyscraping pines. Lying off New Zealand’s North Island, Great Mercury is a haven for outdoor activities such as hiking, horseback riding, and kayaking. Guests stay in two villas designed by Sardinian architect Savin Couelle.
Mnemba Island (Africa). Hosting no more than 20 guests at a time, Mnemba Island is so secluded, it can be accessed only via a three-mile, 20-minute boat trip from a beach that is a one-hour drive from Zanzibar’s airport. Upgraded and expanded bandas provide guests with exquisite lodging on a sun-filled beach.
Necker Island (Caribbean). Owned by Virgin conglomerate founder Richard Branson, Necker Island pampers privacy-seeking vacationers, who can stay in the 10-bedroom Great House or in one of the three Balinese cottages. A seemingly endless list of land and sea activities is offered, as well as sumptuous cuisine from chef Steve Hitchings.
Wakaya Club (Fiji). This 2,200-acre island in the Koro Sea houses guests in traditional bungalows only a few steps from the water’s edge. Set aside from the resort is Vale O, a 12,000-square-foot villa that provides breathtaking views of Wakaya and its neighboring islands.
Waterford Castle (Ireland). Set on a 310-acre island in the Suir River, this 15th-century castle has five regally adorned suites and 14 bedrooms with spectacular views of the property’s championship golf course. Guests may also travel by ferry into Waterford to tour the city’s crystal factory or visit Traemore racetrack.
