Despite its billing as a “modern links” layout—and its setting on the southern coast of Wales—the Machynys Peninsula Golf and Country Club is not a true links course. It hardly matters, though. The club, designed by Jack Nicklaus’ son Gary, is a stunning amalgam of American-style green complexes, man-made lakes, and rambling fairways lined by blackthorn scrub and deep fescue rough. Several holes on the course, which opened in May 2005 and hosted the Wales Ladies Championship of Europe just three months later, play along the water, so control is a constant issue. The track’s proximity to the ocean means that wind also is a factor, one to which golfers are especially vulnerable because of the open terrain. But the careful observer will notice a tree or two—another sign that Machynys strays from links tradition—blocking the breezes on this beautiful coastal course.
