Best of the Best 2012: Golf Courses: Castiglion del Bosco Golf Club

Unveiled last june in what designer Tom Weiskopf calls “one of most beautiful settings I have ever seen,” the Castiglion del Bosco Golf Club (+39.0577.1913001, www.castigliondelbosco.com) adds a first-rate championship course to the many allures of the Tuscan countryside. Weiskopf artfully stitched the course through a patchwork of ancient vineyards on a 4,500-acre wine estate in the pine-covered foothills of the Val d’Orcia, 25 miles south of Siena. “The rolling hillsides provided a perfect palette to lay out the golf course,” Weiskopf says. Though private, his 7,212-yard course is open on a limited basis to guests of the Castiglion del Bosco resort, which includes villas, a 23-suite hotel, and a winery. And while the layout—with its swelling fairways, plateau greens, and swathes of fescue—is certainly a showstopper, Weiskopf concedes that “golf will always be secondary here.”
