For baseball fans, it does not get much better than taking a swing alongside Big Papi—and now they can, at the eighth annual David Ortiz Celebrity Golf Classic, December 3 through 6. Set in the Dominican Republic and hosted by the Sanctuary Cap Cana resort and its Jack Nicklaus–designed Punta Espada golf course, the charity tournament will benefit the David Ortiz Children’s Fund. Established in 2007, the nonprofit works with MassGeneral Hospital for Children and the World Pediatric Project to help disadvantaged youth in New England and the Dominican Republic receive much needed health care.
In the past, tournament participants have included A-list athletes from baseball, basketball, and hockey—including Mariano Rivera, Alex Rodriguez, Bill Russell, and Bobby Orr, as well as a few of entertainment’s heavy hitters. Along with Ortiz’s famous friends, scratch golfers and duffers alike will be able to take advantage of VIP packages that include three-nights’ accommodation in a double-occupancy suite; a welcome reception; a practice round; the tournament round, where each foursome is paired with a celebrity; access to the event’s hospitality suite serving breakfast, lunch, and an open bar; a pairing party; and the closing dinner with awards presentation. The packages also grant entrance to all social events for each golfer’s nonplaying companion. Prices for foursomes, twosomes, and solo players are $20,000; $15,000; and $7,500, respectively, and $6,500 for solo players without a guest.
To date, the celebrity golf classic has raised $1.25 million for the fund and helped earn Ortiz the Roberto Clemente Award from Major League Baseball for exercising his philanthropic muscle. (davidortizchildrensfund.org)
