The exclusive Turnberry Isle Miami resort in Aventura, Florida, hosts the new Special Operations Golf Tournament of South Florida, to benefit the Special Operations Warrior Foundation (SOWF) on May 18, 2014. This inaugural event, held during Armed Forces Day weekend, has already gained impressive support from major corporations and philanthropists, such as Donald Trump.
“I am proud to be associated with such a fine organization as the Special Operations Warrior Foundation,” said Trump.
Founded in 1980, the SOWF, based in Tampa, Florida, is ranked among the top 1% of the nation’s nonprofits. The charity provides funds for a post-secondary education to the surviving children of U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps special operations troops killed in the line of duty. SOWF offers academic, grief and family counseling to surviving spouses, and their children, of special operations personnel who lose their lives in service to our nation, and provides immediate financial assistance to families of hospitalized special operators. The SOWF’s low overhead of 5.5% ensures that the majority of the funds donated go directly to these programs.
The host course of this inaugural event is Turnberry Isle Miami, an exclusive Mediterranean-style retreat spanning 300 lush tropical acres between Miami and Fort Lauderdale. Turnberry Isle’s two Raymond Floyd-designed championship golf courses have changed the landscape of golf in South Florida, as both courses offer lush, tropical grounds accentuated with a variety of elevation changes, contoured fairways, clever doglegs, rolling greens and strategically placed water features. Turnberry Isle Miami has received prominent awards from Golf Digest as one of “America’s Top 50 Courses for Women”, Golfweek’s “Best Resort Courses”, and GOLF Magazine’s Silver Medal Winner for Premier Resorts.
“We are proud to be hosting such a noble organization,” said Larry Brown, Director of Operations at Turnberry Isle Miami. “Our championship courses are generally only open to Turnberry Isle Miami Resort & Golf Club members and hotel guests, but we are more than happy to extend an exclusive invitation to an association that supports the men and women who have honorably and fearlessly served our country.”
Other key sponsors and supporters of the event include, The Trump Organization, SunTrust Bank, JetBlue, Shorty’s BBQ, Mayors, Lincoln Financial Media, Bacardi USA, CanAm Golf, Ortega Cigar Company, and Whole Foods Market, who make this a special occasion which includes a golf clinic sponsored by Turnberry Isle Miami, lunch sponsored by Shorty’s BBQ, golfer’s gifts, and an awards dinner prepared by Turnberry Isle Miami’s award-winning chefs.
Daniel Horwitz, U.S. Air Force veteran and chairman of the event, expressed gratitude to the event sponsors, “The support of major corporations, such as The Trump Organization, Mayors, Whole Foods Market, SunTrust Bank, JetBlue and others have been outstanding, and show the great potential for this event to grow in the future to support the children and families of SOWF.”
